Amanda Marie Duran

On December 22, 2004 my sister Carmen and I were going to El Dorado, Arkansas to finish our Christmas shopping. On our way, we were involved in a head-on collision. A driver had fallen asleep at the wheel and crossed over three lanes of traffic, hitting us head on. I was pinned in my car for over an hour. Emergency workers used the jaws-of- life to get me out of my car. My sister suffered bumps and bruises, but I had multiple breaks to my left elbow, left femur, left ankle, and a shattered right knee. I also suffered from a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

I was rushed to Medical Center of South Arkansas where I received one unit of blood to stabilize me so that I could be transferred to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. Things were really touch and go for the next few weeks. Doctors really couldn’t give my parents a lot of hope. I spent the next six weeks in PICU. While there, I received two more units of blood so that surgeons could begin fixing my broken bones. I was then transferred to Our Children’s House at Baylor where I spent six weeks in therapy.

Thanks to volunteer donors, I was finally able to return home to my sister and family. I currently receive therapy three times a week while attending Junction City High School where I am a senior and a varsity cheerleader.

Thank you LifeShare for helping save my life and for letting me tell my story!
